about

Written as love/hate letter to his music career, this song was written in the middle of the Pandemic when singer/keyboardist Josh was forced to look back on the peaks and valleys of his life in music. The verses reference specific turning points in his relationship with music. One in which he believed the path ahead was paved in gold and the other in which he felt he should've worked much harder. This all climbs to the chorus where he wishes out loud he'd had more guidance from a father figure. Someone to tell him that the "playtime" aspect of life/music should typically come after the work is complete... Something Josh believes now he always got backwards.

lyrics

In 05 we were thriving the future glowed,
In the crystal ball of my mind
Unprepared unaware and a boy wide eyed
But you were kind.

When the sun went down.
I Sang your name out.
And the world grew loud.
We’d find our own crowd.

In a world at play, thinking life would stay,
Work was for the day and you would speak.
If my choices were joined by a fathers voice
I’d embrace the noise

No one told me the work would pay.
And you’d be the hand that streamlined play.
If I’d known we’d grow old someday.
I’d wait out play for the night time, our time.

2012 and the daylight melted
A misted plan still you held my hand.
When the time came to grow my roots,
Reach for higher fruit, I would chose my youth.

When the sun went down
I sang your name out
And the world grew loud,
We’d find out own crowd.

I was young, the world felt old,
The picture you painted for me glowed gold.
You would give me a playground’s smile.
A fate untainted by 9 to 5.

No one told me the work would pay.
And you’d be the hand that streamlined play.
If I’d known we’d grow old someday.
I’d wait out play for the night time, our time.

Smother me in told you so.
Maybe next time I’ll heed the need to know
Could be somewhere the outcome grows.
If only in this life, it wasn’t for this time

No one told me the work would pay.
And you’d be the hand that streamlined play.
If I’d known we’d grow old someday.
I’d wait out play for the night time, our time.

No one told me the work would pay.
And you’d be the hand that streamlined play.
If I’d known we’d grow old someday.
I’d wait out play for the night time, our time.
